French captain, Kylian Mbappe, has expressed confidence in Spain's potential to advance far in the ongoing 2024 UEFA European Championship in Germany.

La Roja, three-time champions of the Euros, kicked off the tournament in impressive fashion, dismantling 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia in their opening Group B match.

Despite losing possession for the first time in 136 matches, Spain displayed ruthless efficiency in the final third, scoring three goals against Zlatko Dalic's men.

Although they might not possess the same dominance that saw them rule European and global football between 2008 and 2012, Luis de la Fuente's team has incorporated more directness and speed, thanks to young talents like Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams.

These prodigies were a constant threat to the Croatian defence, especially Yamal, who became the youngest player ever to feature at the Euros, ESPN reports.

While Spain was not widely considered a pre-tournament favourite, their commanding 3-0 victory over Croatia has made a strong statement, convincing Mbappe of their capabilities.

Mbappe backs Spain to do well at Euros

The 25-year-old, set to join Real Madrid after the tournament, believes that based on their first-game performance, de la Fuente's squad will progress far in the competition.

“Everyone watched Spain's game yesterday. They are a team that is going to go far," Mbappe said in a press conference, as cited by Tribuna.

Although he predicted Spain would advance to the later stages of the tournament, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward emphasised his desire to win the Euros with France.

"I hope [Spain doesn't go] very far, because we want to win. But I wish them the best,” he ended.

When is Mbappe's first game at Euro 2024?

Mbappe's France will have their first taste of the ongoing Euros when they take on Austria in their Group D opener on Monday, June 17 at the Merkur Spiel-Arena, Dusseldorf, per NBC Sports.

Spain forward picks Mbappe as dream teammate

In a previous publication, Sports Brief reported that Spain forward, Nico Williams, has revealed the player he would love to share a dressing room with.

Despite Barcelona's interest, the younger of the Williams brothers is an avid admirer of Kylian Mbappe.

The Bilbao winger expressed his desire to team up with Mbappe, but only at the international level.
