Former Manchester United midfielder was involved in an awkward spat with a football fan at a restaurant.

Herrera did not take kindly to the fan's heckling, who openly called out the midfielder for committing to Athletic Bilbao instead of signing for Real Zaragoza.

After his contract with the San Mamés team ran out, it was expected that Herrera would finally rejoin Real Zaragoza, a club that helped shape him into a top footballer.

Herrera graduated from Zaragoza’s academy, eventually making it to the first team. After two years at the club, he moved to Athletic Bilbao in 2011, where he spent three years before a famous move to Manchester United.

He later joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2019, spending three years in the French capital before returning to Bilbao in 2022.

Real Zaragoza fans expected Herrera to at least return to the club during the twilight years of his career, particularly because he promised to make a comeback at the club.

Herrera vs a fan

In a video that went viral on social media on Thursday, June 13, Herrera was having a meal with friends when a fan approached him and said something in Spanish.

According to talkSPORT, the fan called out the former Manchester United man, saying, “What kind of Zaragozista are you?”

The comment triggered Herrera, who got up from his seat and approached the fan. After a brief angry exchange between the pair, the fan took off with his camera still recording and the midfielder chased after him.

Hours after the incident, Herrera’s wife took to social media to suggest Real Zaragoza did not do enough to get the 34-year-old back to La Romareda.

“A year waiting for a call, a visit, a project, a little affection... You stay where they have shown you," she wrote on her social media.

Real Zaragoza plays in the Spanish second tier – a factor that could have played a factor in Herrera’s decision to stay at Bilbao.

Top 5 free agents

Sports Brief also reported on the top five free agents as clubs continue to announce their retained list.

Thiago Alcantara headlines this list, as the Spaniard was released by Liverpool upon expiry of his contract.

At 33, Thiago is unlikely to play for another top club and is attracting interest from Brazil and Saudi Arabia.
