Sections of football fans are adamant Lionel Messi is still the best player in the world after watching the Argentine’s latest highlights.

La Albiceleste played their final friendly on Friday, June 14, before embarking on their Copa America title defence.

Guatemala, ranked 108th in the world in the latest FIFA rankings, took a shock lead against the reigning world champions at the FedExField in Maryland through Lisandro Martinez’s own goal.

Messi equalised for Argentina moments later, capitalising on a poor pass from the goalkeeper to score arguably the most straightforward goal of his career.

Lautaro Martinez turned the game on its head in the 39th minute, scoring from the penalty spot to ensure Argentina went into half-time with a slender lead.

Martinez scored his second in the 66th minute after some brilliant interplay with Messi, who added a fourth for Argentina after playing a decent one-two with Angel di Maria.

Fans react to Messi’s masterclass

Highlights of Messi against Guatemala have since gone viral on social media, with fans asserting the former Barcelona man still had what it takes to be considered the best player in the world.

The 36-year-old could have easily bagged a hat-trick, but his cheeky free-kick in the goalkeeper’s near post agonizingly hit the upright.

Here are some reactions from fans:

"Still the greatest, 9th loading"

"Argentina came with Messi and Lautaro as the strikers but somehow Messi is playing from midfield, he still scared twice and assisted once. That's my GOAT there."

"Messi is still giving us a masterclass."

"Messi still plays like he just got started."

"Could still ball in Europe. He’s too good for Miami."

"Messi plays football differently. Wow."

"Why is this man saying he will retire soon? Cause he played like a 17-year-old boy."

What next for Messi?

Messi, Argentina’s all-time top goal scorer, will be a crucial piece of Lionel Scaloni’s puzzle once the Copa America kicks off.

After Argentina’s opener against Canada, La Albiceleste will play two other group games – against Chile and Peru.

The Inter Miami star admitted that winning back-to-back Copa America titles would be difficult, but added that Argentina would put its best foot forward.

"It will be harder and harder, the games are getting tougher, winning [the Copa] again is hard, but we will try again,” Messi said, per BBC.

Messi names one celebrity he wants to meet

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on the one sports celebrity Lionel Messi dreams of meeting.

Despite enjoying immense influence in the world of sports, Messi has somehow failed to take a picture with former Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan.

He revealed to ESPN Argentina that he was yet to meet Jordan, who slightly edges Lakers star LeBron James in the basketball GOAT debate in many fans’ eyes.
