Gareth Southgate named a preliminary 33-man squad, which was reduced to 26 after the international friendlies against Bosnia, Herzegovina, and Iceland.
One of the high-profile omissions was Grealish and Tottenham Hotspur forward James Maddison. Both raised questions in the English media, and the players expressed disappointment.

“Was I shocked when Jack was left out? Shocked because I know what Jack can do… I think Jack would be the first one to say he could have had a better season. I think he’s come out publicly and said he could have had a better season…” he told ITV Sport.
“You’re here on merit. And I believe it should always be like that. You’re in this team because you’ve played well for your club which then puts you into the England fold.”
The comments were looked at in a bad light by the fans of the English champions, who claimed their captain should not have said that about his teammate.
