Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Bryce Moon has indicated buying the Premier Soccer League status of Maritzburg United.

Maritzburg are relegated from the DStv Premiership at the end of the 2022/2023 season and then participated in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

'The Team of Choice' finished fourth in the second division last season after managing 46 points, winning 10 matches, drawing 12 and losing 8 times in 30 matches.

They narrowly missed out on the top three spots and failed to qualify for the PSL Promotional/Relegation Playoffs.

Amatuks and Baroka beat the KZN-based outfit to the second and third spots, respectively, while Magesi FC won the NFD title.

With the conclusion of the 2023/2024 season, Moon had stated that he is revisiting his plans to buy Maritzburg United.

Last year, the former midfielder attempted to acquire the club, but the deal could not be sealed with the management led by chairman Farouk Kadodia.

Moon said he still has big plans for the club. He told MSW via iDiski Times:

“I have big plans for Maritzburg United if I do take over. I wanna be the David Beckham of South Africa if I’m given a chance.
“We are back in those discussions now with Maritzburg United, and we will see what happens in the next two weeks. I want to own that team myself.”

The former Bafana Bafana international retired from professional football in 2017 after a successful career that began in 2004.

How Maritzburg United relegated

Sports Brief earlier reported that Maritzburg United chairman was not happy with the team's performance, even blaming some players for 'betraying the club.'

The poor showing meant they were forced into the Promotion Playoffs alongside Casric Stars and Cape Town City.

During the 2022/2023 season, United finished second behind Spurs, and were relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship. It ended a 15-year stay in the top flight of South African football.
