The Super Eagles of Nigeria commenced the Finidi George era with a lacklustre draw against Bafana Bafana of South Africa.

The crunch FIFA World Cup qualification fixture, which had been preceded by tough talks from players of both camps, was lit up in the 29th minute when forward, Themba Zwane, capitalised on some poor defending from the Nigerian backline to surge Hugo Broos’ side into the lead.

The remainder of the first half was relatively more controlled by the South African team, as they successfully snuffed out every attacking threat posed by the Nigerian team.

However, the game took another twist at the start of the second half, as the South African team caved in under pressure and conceded an equaliser from Hatayspor midfielder, Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, who brilliantly slotted past goalkeeper, Ronwen Williams.

The remainder of the half saw the South African team come under a flurry of attacks from the Nigerian side.

However, some brilliant goalkeeping from Williams, coupled with poor finishing by many forwards of the Super Eagles, meant there were no other goals to treat the fans at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium.

The game ended one-all, leaving both Nigeria and South Africa sitting fifth and fourth respectively, in their Group C standings, with Lesotho, followed closely by Rwanda, firmly in the driving seat as they pursue a spot in the 2026 edition of the FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria is set to face the Benin Republic on June 11, while South Africa will take on Zimbabwe on June 10.

Babayaro backs Amokachi’s resignation

Sports Brief in another report stated former shot-stopper of the Nigerian team, Emmanuel Babayaro, has backed Daniel Amokachi’s decision to resign from his role as assistant coach of the Super Eagles.

The 51-year-old was appointed to be an assistant to Finidi by the NFF.
