Jose Mourinho said he was dreaming of winning the Turkish Super Lig with new club Fenerbahce but that he is making "no promises" during a press conference on Monday that was followed online by more than 80,000 people.

Mourinho was speaking from Fenerbahce's headquarters after he was appointed coach of the Istanbul-based club on Sunday.

Mourinho has been searching for a new club since being sacked by Roma in January.

He has now replaced Ismail Kartal as the head coach of Fenerbahçe, despite Kartal losing only one league game last season while Galatasaray claimed the Turkish title.

Mourinho is one of the most decorated managers in recent history, but many view his move to Turkey as a sign of his recent struggles.

Jose Mourinho’s managerial record

Mourinho began his managerial career with stints at Benfica and Leiria, but he truly made his name at Porto, leading them to consecutive European trophies. Porto won the UEFA Cup in 2003 and the Champions League the following season, an achievement unlikely to be matched by another Portuguese club.

His success in Portugal earned him a move to Chelsea, where he famously dubbed himself the 'Special One.' In his first season, Mourinho guided Chelsea to their first league title in 50 years, conceding just 15 goals. He won two more Premier League titles across his two spells at Stamford Bridge.

Mourinho secured his second Champions League title with Inter Milan in 2010 and added two more European titles to his resume: the Europa League with Manchester United and the Conference League with Roma.

However, according to Transfermarkt, Mourinho’s points-per-game record has declined over time. His tenure at Real Madrid yielded his best points-per-game record of 2.30, but his last two spells at Tottenham and Roma saw this figure drop below 1.8.

Critics argue that Mourinho’s managerial style has become outdated, but he aims to prove them wrong once again as he takes on the challenge of ending Fenerbahçe's ten-year wait for the Turkish title.

Reaction to Jose Mourinho’s appointment in Turkey

The scenes in Istanbul at Mourinho’s unveiling were akin to title-winning celebrations. Fenerbahçe fans are hopeful that their dreams will come true next season. The team amassed 99 points last season under Kartal, but Galatasaray won the league by three points.

Fenerbahçe holds the record for the most Turkish league titles with 28 but hasn't lifted the trophy since 2014. There is a growing belief that Mourinho could be the man to end that drought, and he already has the supporters on his side.

"No promises. But is obvious that the main target, the main dream is to win the Turkish Super Lig," said the 61-year-old via France 24.
"But step-by-step we see, hopefully we are going to be in the new Champions League," added Mourinho, who will be tasked with guiding Fenerbahce through second round qualifying before the new, expanded version of European football's premier competition begins next season.

Mourinho, who enjoyed major success at Chelsea and Real Madrid, less so at Manchester United and Tottenham, was dismissed by Serie A side Roma after two-and-a-half years in January with the club struggling in ninth place at the time.

Mourinho aims swipe at Wenger

Sports Brief also reported on the subtle swipe Jose Mourinho aimed at Arsene Wenger after Real Madrid’s Champions League triumph.

The tactician was full of praise for Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti, who has now won the most UCL titles of any manager. The Italian has won five: two with AC Milan and three with Madrid.

He was informed of Wenger’s presence at the stadium while doing pitch side punditry, and he asked to see his former rival to explain his proposed offside rule.
