In a heated social media exchange that began on June 1, former Harambee Stars and Inter Milan star, McDonald Mariga, fiercely responded to a blogger's mocking tweet ridiculing his post-retirement choices.

Francis Gaitho's controversial post compared the midfielder's political career to that of former Manchester City player, Vincent Kompany, who is now Bayern Munich's new manager.

Mariga, who made history as the first Kenyan to play and win the UEFA Champions League in 2010, transitioned to politics in 2019.

He entered the political arena to vie for the Kibera parliamentary seat following MP Ken Okoth's death.

The 36-year-old footballer was signed by Jose Mourinho in January 2010 after a proposed move to Man City fell through. Under 'The Special One's' guidance, Mariga contributed to Inter's historic treble victory. Besides the Italian giants, he had stints with Real Sociedad and Parma.

According to Tranfermarkt, he began his professional career in Sweden in 2005 and is the elder brother of Victor Wanyama, who currently plays in the United States with CF Montreal Impact.

Despite his ambitions, Mariga's political journey has been challenging. He has unsuccessfully contested for the Kibera seat twice.

Blogger trolls Mariga, Kenyan legend responds

“Vincent Kompany of Belgium and McDonald Mariga of Kenya during a past football match between Manchester City and Inter Milan. Vincent Kompany is now the Bayern Munich manager, and McDonald Mariga is a UDA member and goon based in Kibra," read the post on X, accompanied by an image of Mariga contesting the ball with Kompany.

Infuriated by the post, Mariga responded with a strongly-worded post, as reported by Pulse Sports.

"Stop mentioning my name as if I come from your place. You will get married to other men if you keep mentioning my name, you stray town dog!"

In a previous interview with Radio 47, Mariga explained his political aspirations were driven by a desire to improve sports infrastructure in Kenya and support local football clubs.

Mariga among five 'worst' players to win the Champions League

Sports Brief reported that Mariga featured among the five 'worst' winners of the Champions League.

These players barely lifted a finger as their teammates did the heavy lifting and put in the hard yards.

Despite being part of the squad that completed a treble under Mourinho, Mariga did not play the final.
