Manchester United are reportedly ready to part ways with Benni McCarthy, two years after the legendary South African forward joined their backroom staff under Erik ten Hag.

The former FC Porto star’s contract at Old Trafford expires this summer and it appears that interest in his services back home in South Africa could propel his exit from the Premier League giants.

According to Tribal Football, McCarthy has been strongly linked with the Kaizer Chiefs job as the club’s fans believe he could be the best candidate to succeed Calvin Johnson after a miserable 2023/24 season.

The former West Ham striker has previously coached in the DStv Premiership but was sacked as head coach of AmaZulu FC and remained jobless for a while before taking the Manchester United job.

Kaizer Chiefs are keen to hire an experienced manager ahead of next season and have been linked with some top coaches across South Africa, including ex-Mamelodi Sundowns manager, Pitso Mosimane.

No new offer for McCarthy

Meanwhile, it has been reported that Manchester United will not renew the contract of McCarthy as the Old Trafford club continues its restructuring under its new management, The South African reports.

The Red Devils have finished third and eighth on the log in the two seasons the legendary South African has served as assistant to Erik ten Hag, winning the Carabao Cup and FA Cup in the process.

It is unclear if Ten Hag will remain as Manchester United coach when the 2024/25 season kicks off in England, but it is almost certain McCarthy will be one of the first coaches to be shown the exit door at the club.

5 coaches keen on Kaizer Chiefs

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that McCarthy is reportedly one of five managers strongly linked with becoming the next Kaizer Chiefs manager ahead of the 2024/25 season.

The ex-Porto striker recently spoke about the club being an institution and that ‘you don’t say no to an institution.’

Sead Ramovic, Willard Katsande, Mosimane, and Vladimir Vermezovic are the other coaches currently being linked with the Amakhosi job.
