Victor Boniface and Nathan Tella joined the list of Nigerian footballers who ended a European season as invincible champions following Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga triumph.

Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich’s 11-year dominance of the German top flight in remarkable fashion, winning 28 games and drawing just six of 34 matches in the 2023/24 campaign.

According to Sports Intel, Xabi Alonso’s men’s triumph was the club’s first Bundesliga title in their over 100 years of history, after finishing as runners-up on five different occasions.

Boniface and Tella have joined superstars like Kanu Nwankwo and Finidi George, who were the first Nigerians to end a season as onvincibles after winning the Dutch Eredivisie with Ajax in 1995.

Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey, and Leon Balogun are the other Nigerians who also finished as invincible champions when all three players won the Scottish League trophy with Rangers under manager Steven Gerard.

Boniface missing from Canal+ Africa XI

Meanwhile, French broadcaster, Canal+, has named their African Team of the Season, with Boniface one of the biggest names missing from the list, Punch Nigeria reports.

Reigning Africa Footballer of the Year and Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen, was also missing from the site's African squad, which was published on Wednesday, May 29.

Mohammed Kudus, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Serhou Guirassy, and Ademola Lookman are among those listed in the Canal+ XI after the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign.

Boniface reacts after DFB Pokal win

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Boniface was in a jubilant mood after Bayer Leverkusen defeated Kaiserslautern to win their first-ever DFB-Pokal in 31 years.

The Super Eagles striker played no part in the final as he was left on the subs bench, but still celebrated the victory with his teammates at the end of the game.

Granit Xhaka scored the only goal of the game in the first half as Leverkusen claimed a deserving 1-0 win over the Bundesliga 2 side at the Olympiastadion.
