Mason Greenwood sent an emotional farewell message to Getafe fans on Sunday, May 26, confirming his stint with the La Liga club had come to an end.

The 22-year-old is set to leave Spain after his loan spell with the top flight side, having made 46 appearances across all competitions last season.

He was shipped to La Liga in September 2023 by his parent club, Manchester United, after the conclusion of an investigation into his behaviour.

Multiple reports suggested the Red Devils were willing to keep Greenwood at Old Trafford, but there was some resistance from other key stakeholders.

The La Liga move proved to be the right one for the striker, who re-established himself as a top player after the controversy he was subjected to since being accused of battery and causing bodily harm to another person in 2022.

According to GOAL, the England international scored 10 goals for Getafe during his loan spell.

Greenwood’s message to fans

On Sunday, the Manchester United forward took to social media to thank Getafe fans for welcoming him to the club.

"Thank you for making me feel welcomed and one of your own. I enjoyed every second, alongside my team-mates and club. A bitter-sweet ending, but it was a pleasure to play for you, I wish you all the best," he said, per Express Sport.

His message came after Getafe’s last game of the season, Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Mallorca.

The defeat confirmed a lacklustre end to Greenwood’s loan spell with Los Azulones. They ended their campaign in 12th place on the log with 43 points.

What next for Greenwood?

Greenwood is now set to return to the Theatre of Dreams, although there is a wave of uncertainty over his future at the Premier League club.

Despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously opening the door to the striker’s return, United could cash in on the youngster, as teams like Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus have all shown interest.

Erik ten Hag answers sack question

Sports Brief also reported on Erik ten Hag’s answer when asked whether he would get sacked or stay as manager.

The Dutchman was elated after his side secured the FA Cup on Saturday, May 25, at the expense of Manchester City.

There were reports before the game that ten Hag would lose his job as United boss regardless of the game's outcome.
