Super Eagles captains, William Troost-Ekong and Kenneth Omeruo, have reportedly been dropped by coach Finidi George for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers next month.

Both central defenders, who were part of the silver-winning team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, have battled with fitness issues and recently recovered from injury setbacks.

According to Own Goal Nigeria, Luton Town defender, Gabriel Osho, is expected to receive another call-up to the Super Eagles after missing the friendly matches against Ghana and Mali in March due to injury.

Benjamin Taminu, Seyi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey are the other central defenders also expected to be included in the Super Eagles squad Finidi is preparing to unveil ahead of June’s qualifiers.

Nigeria will host South Africa on June 7 at the Godswill International Stadium in Uyo, before travelling to Ivory Coast to take on Benin a few days later.

Finidi identifies Bafana Bafana’s weaknesses

Meanwhile, Finidi claims he knows the strengths and weaknesses of the South African team ahead of June’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, to be staged in Uyo, Daily Post reports.

The 53-year-old hailed the expertise of video analyst, Mehmet Ozturk, who he said had provided him with detailed information on Bafana Bafana players in an extensive report.

Nigeria must defeat South Africa and Benin in their next two qualifiers to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup intact after drawing their first two games against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Finidi speaks on Super Eagles captaincy

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Finidi has given his take on the Super Eagles captainship position, following his appointment as head coach.

Rumours have it that Troost-Ekong will be stripped of the captain's armband in favour of the most senior player in the Nigerian men's team, Omeruo.

However, Finidi stated that he would not intervene in the selection of the team's captain, preferring to leave that choice up to his team instead.
