William Troost-Ekong and Victor Boniface could make their anticipated returns to the Super Eagles ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic.

Both superstars, who have not featured for Nigeria’s senior men's team in several months due to varying degrees of injuries, will reportedly be back wearing the country’s colours in June.

According to Own Goal Nigeria, newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, has reportedly listed Troost-Ekong and Boniface in his provisional squad for the World Cup qualifiers.

Nigeria's vice-captain has been out of action since February after undergoing surgery to repair a thigh injury he suffered at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where he led the team to the silver medal.

Boniface has also not featured for the Super Eagles since injuring his leg while in the team’s training camp in Abu Dhabi, during the preparations for the AFCON tournament.

Nigeria will host South Africa in Uyo on June 7 before travelling to Ivory Coast to take on Benin Republic a few days later.

4 NPFL players make Nigeria squad

Meanwhile, Finidi has also included four players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) in the Super Eagles squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Brila reports.

The ex-Enyimba manager’s love for the local league and its talents appears to have influenced his choice, contrary to his predecessor, Jose Peseiro, who had neglected local-based players.

Finidi’s squad will reportedly be formally announced by the Nigeria Football Federation next week as they kickstart preparations for the crunch games against South Africa and Benin.

Troost-Ekong returns to full training

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Troost-Ekong's return to full fitness has been received as a massive boost for the Super Eagles ahead of June’s World Cup qualifiers.

The 30-year-old defender has made a surprisingly fast recovery after rupturing his right leg's biceps femoris at the AFCON, which necessitated undergoing surgery.

Troost-Ekong played a key role in the Super Eagles' successful campaign at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, scoring three goals to help Nigeria claim the silver medal.
