Ghana's U17 team, the Black Starlets are through to the semi-finals of the WAFU Zone B U17 Cup of Nations after a 2-0 victory over Benin in Legon on May 21, 2024.

The hosts made light work of their opponents after early goals from Mark Kagawa and Theophilus Ayamga.

Ghana finished top of Group A and will now wait for the runners-up from Group B in the semi-final of the competition, which serves as the qualifiers for the U17 Africa Cup of Nations.

In a dominant performance on Tuesday in Legon, it was the Benin team that got off to a bright start after handing Ghana an early score.

However, the Black Starlets recovered quickly as they controlled most of the game in the first half, and after just 20 minutes the team broke the deadlock through Kagawa, who looped the ball past the Young Squirrels goalkeeper.

Two minutes later, the midfielder went from scorer to provider to serve Ayamga with Ghana's second of the game.

The Black Starlets kept the pressure on Benin and should have extended their lead through Joseph Narbi and Benjamin Tsivanyo.

After the break, Black Starlets coach Laryea Kingston rang in some changes with qualification to the semi-finals almost sealed.

Despite creating numerous chances in the second-half, the Ghana U17 team failed to add to their tally.

In Group B, Nigeria will face Togo while Burkina Faso engages Niger, with the first two teams in the group qualifying for the semis.

Only the first two teams from the competition will qualify for the U17 Cup of Nations later this year.

Gyan backs Ghana U17 coach Laryea Kingston

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that former Ghana captain, Asamoah Gyan backed ex-Black Stars teammate Laryea Kingston to become a great coach following the blistering start to his career as a gaffer.

Kingston led Ghana's U17 team, the Black Starlets, to the semi-final of the WAFU Zone B U17 Cup of Nations after a 2-0 victory over Benin on Tuesday.

Before yesterday's game, the former Ghana winger had also supervised his team to a 5-1 win over the Ivory Coast.
