Victor Boniface finally got his hands on the coveted Bundesliga title after the conclusion of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season.

Bayer Leverkusen edged Augsburg 2-1 in their 34th and final league match of the season on Saturday, May 17, to become the first-ever team to finish a Bundesliga season unbeaten.

Despite missing nearly four months with injury, the 23-year-old Nigerian played a vital role in Xabi Alondo's team, which battled relegation last season.

Leverkusen finished the season with 90 points. Only Bayern Munich (2012/13) have registered more in a Bundesliga season (91).

Alonso's team can end the season as treble winners if they beat Atalanta in the Europa League final and Kaiserslautern in the DFB Cup final this week.

Even if they miss out on both trophies, it will still be a historic season for the club.

Nigerians with unbeaten seasons

Victor Boniface - Ajax

The Super Eagles centre-forward joined the club last summer from Belgian club, Union Saint-Gilloise, and became a key piece in Alonso's juggernaut.

With his strike against Augsburg on Saturday, Boniface finished with 14 league goals, the most by a Leverkusen player this season. He also provided eight assists, with Alejandro Grimaldo (13) and Florian Wirtz (11) the only players with more for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

Nathan Tella - Ajax

Like Boniface, Tella joined Leverkusen last summer. The winger signed from Southampton but played mainly as a substitute this season. The 24-year-old made 24 Bundesliga appearances and registered five goals and four assists.

Tella started eight matches and came on as a substitute in 16 games. The Nigeria international has a chance to win the treble with Leverkusen this season.

Finidi George - Ajax

The current Super Eagles coach played in some legendary teams in the 1990s.

He was part of the 1994/95 Ajax Amsterdam team that went unbeaten in the Eredivisie and Champions League.

Finidi played alongside many football legends, including Edwin Van der Sar, Frank Rijkaard, Frank de Boer, Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf, Patrick Kluivert, and Nwankwo Kanu, per Squawka. He scored 8 goals and had 9 assists in 30 league games.

The former Real Betis man spent three seasons at Ajax and is fondly remembered for his sensational goal against Bayern Munich in their 1994/95 Champions League semi-final.

He was fresh from winning the 1994 AFCON with Nigeria.

Nwankwo Kanu - Ajax and Arsenal

Kanu might be the only player to have two invincible seasons. He did so at Ajax and Arsenal.

He was teammates with his compatriot Finidi at Ajax during the 1994/95 season at Ajax. He scored 10 goals in 18 league appearances. By 1995, he was an Olympic gold medallist, a Champions League winner, and a Dutch league champion. The 47-year-old left Ajax with three Eredivisie titles.

He would achieve more success in England, especially with Arsenal. Kanu was part of Arsene Wenger's Invincibles, who won the Premier League in 2003/04 without tasting defeat. That record is still untouchable.

Kanu retired in 2012 and could possibly be the most decorated Nigerian footballer ever.

Nigerians who won Bundesliga

Sports Brief earlier reported on Nigerians who won the German Bundesliga.

Boniface and Tella are the latest Nigerians to win the German league, but Super Eagles legend Sunday Olise did so with Borussia Dortmund in the 2001/02 season.

Pascal Ojigwe also won the Bundesliga with Kaiserslautern in the 1997/98 campaign.
