Marco Reus displayed heartwarming elegance with a gesture after playing his final home match for Borussia Dortmund.

The Germany international, who joined the Black and Yellow from Borussia Monchengladbach 12 years ago, played his last home game on Saturday.

The 34-year-old celebrated the occasion with a remarkable free-kick during a resounding 4-0 victory against Darmstadt on the Bundesliga's closing day.

Despite not being a regular starter this season, Reus was included in the starting XI for his farewell match at the Westfalenstadion, with Champions League qualification already guaranteed.

Dortmund fans paid tribute to their hero through an elaborate choreography portraying his shirt alongside a banner bearing a heartfelt message:

"Your name represents identity and loyalty—danke, Marco!"

Upon Reus's substitution in the 81st minute, his teammates lined up to create a guard of honour as he exited the field.

Marco Reus shows his class

After the match, Reus went to the Sudtribune, the yellow wall, climbed onto the stand, and led the ultras in chants.

He then surprised the ultras by paying for thousands of supporters' post-match beers in the bar behind the stand.

Photos showed a note from Reus at the bar that read:

"Thank you for everything! The farewell beer is on me. Your Marco."

What's next for Reus?

Over 12 seasons at Dortmund, Reus made 428 appearances, scoring 170 goals and providing 131 assists, per Transfermarkt.

He might add to these tallies if he plays in the Champions League final against Real Madrid at Wembley on June 1.

Despite not enjoying too much success in terms of silverware at the club, the forward has won the DFB Cup twice with Dortmund.

Reus will look for a new club from June 2024 after he departs from Dortmund as a free agent.

Most loyal players in Europe

Sports Brief also reported on some of the most loyal players in Europe’s top five leagues as Thomas Muller tops the list.

Reus is also among the longest-serving players for a single club, sitting in 25th spot, behind big names like Iker Muniain, Nacho Fernandez and Manuel Neuer.
