Andre Onana reached a significant yet unwanted milestone while playing for Manchester United during their Premier League encounter against Newcastle United on Wednesday, May 15.

The Cameroonian goalkeeper, who joined the Red Devils last summer as David de Gea's successor, faced a challenging start but has demonstrated a remarkable turnaround since returning from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Despite Man United enduring a difficult season under Erik ten Hag's leadership, Onana has emerged as one of the standout performers.

According to MEN, the 28-year-old is among the select few players considered indispensable by United, alongside young talents Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Hojlund, highlighting his crucial role within the team.

Breakdown of Andre Onana's statistics this season

Analysing Onana's debut season statistically reveals a notable concern: he has conceded over 80 goals across all competitions, with 58 of those occurring in the Premier League alone.

However, one remarkable feat stands out: As Centre Goals reported, Onana became the first Manchester United goalkeeper to face 200 shots in a single Premier League campaign.

This statistic sheds light on the immense pressure the ex-Inter Milan goalie has faced throughout the season.

Despite the high number of goals conceded, Onana leads the league in saves made.

It emphasises his exceptional ability, as his save percentage of 72.77% demonstrates his effectiveness in thwarting numerous attempts on goal week after week.

Considering the volume of shots faced and Onana's impressive save rate, improved defensive support could have significantly reduced the number of goals conceded.

EPL Goalkeepers with most saves, Onana leads

With this in mind, Sports Brief examines the goalkeepers in the division with the highest number of saves, with Onana comfortably leading the chart.

The La Masia graduate has four more saves than Luton shot-stopper Thomas Kaminski, who holds the second position, while former Arsenal custodian Bernd Leno, currently with Fulham, completes the top three.

It's also noteworthy that none of the top four Premier League sides have their No.1 goalkeeper on the list, underscoring the level of protection they receive from their well-drilled teams.

Comparing Andre Onana to David De Gea

The Red Devils acquired the Cameroonian goalkeeper from Inter Milan as a replacement for David de Gea, who departed the club after more than a decade.

But how do his performances compare to De Gea's during the Spaniard's final Premier League season at the Theatre of Dreams as Sports Brief compared the two?

Onana has conceded more goals so far (58) than De Gea (43) in a campaign that saw the latter win the Golden Glove Award.

During that time, the former Spain international kept 17 clean sheets, nine more than Onana's eight. Despite Onana conceding more goals, he has evidently faced more shots than De Gea did last season.
