Samuel Chukwueze has been ruled out for the rest of the 2023/24 season after tests revealed the Nigerian winger had injured his left thigh during AC Milan’s 5-1 win over Cagliari.

The 24-year-old forward, who has had a mixed first season in Italy, was replaced after the first half by Rafael Leao after picking up the injury which is now confirmed to be more serious than first feared.

According to Sporting Sun, Chukwueze has been ruled out for several weeks after tests confirmed the Super Eagles winger had a Grade one lesion to the femoral bicep in the left thigh.

The former Villareal player, who has only scored three goals this season for AC Milan, is expected to miss the Rossoneri’s remaining two games of the season against Torino and Salernitana.

Chukwueze also faces a race against time to be fit for Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic in June.

Super Eagles injury crisis deepens

Meanwhile, Nigeria could also be without Napoli forward Victor Osimhen and Boavista left-back Bruno Onyemaechi for the upcoming games against South Africa and Benin Republic, Complete Sports reports.

The Partenopei has announced Osimhen is undergoing a recovery program after the 25-year-old forward picked up a muscle injury during the club’s Serie A clash against Bologna on Saturday, May 11.

Onyemaechi, just like Chukwueze, is also expected to miss the remainder of the campaign due to injury and leave the Super Eagles team depleted ahead of June’s crucial games.

Chukwueze doubtful for Super Eagles

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Chukwueze could miss back-to-back international windows for the Super Eagles after picking up yet another injury while in action for AC Milan.

The 24-year-old winger, who missed Nigeria’s previous friendly games in March against Ghana and Mali, will now face a race against time to be fit for the World Cup qualifiers next month.

The Super Eagles will face Bafana Bafana of South Africa on June 7 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, before travelling to Ivory Coast to face Benin a few days later.
