Former Nigerian international, Finidi George, has been unveiled as the new Super Eagles coach after officially signing a two-year contract offered by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The 53-year-old was unveiled to the media on Monday, May 13, inside the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Press Conference Room in Abuja.

Minister for Sports, Owan Enoh, was present at the ceremony along with other top officials of the NFF, led by their president, Ibrahim Gusau.

Finidi was appointed permanently after the departure of Jose Peseiro at the conclusion of his contract.

He had assisted the Portuguese tactician at the last African Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, where the team finished second place.

In his remarks while accepting the offer, Finidi said, via ACL Sports:

"I am not quite worried about earning even as much or even more than Peseiro because what I’m getting is good enough for me at the moment. The moment I add value to what I’m here to do, the money will definitely come."

The former Enyimba of Aba manager has picked his former teammate, Daniel Amokachi, as his assistant, while Olatunji Baruwa retains his role as goalkeeping coach, having also served under Peseiro.

Contract details for Finidi George

Having represented the Nigerian national team in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and two FIFA World Cups as a player, Finidi was presented with a two-year contract which runs until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The NFF stated that there would be no salaries for assistants except for match allowances and bonuses, while the new Nigeria coach will earn a huge N15 million monthly, making him the highest-paid indigenous coach ever.

Finidi George's first task

His first task will be to pick the maximum points from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (home) and Benin Republic (away) in a few weeks.

Nigeria take on Bafana Bafana at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on June 7, followed by a date with Benin Republic in Abidjan three days later.

The Super Eagles currently have two points from their opening group games as the qualifying race for the next Mundial heats up.

Alloy Agu sends message to Finidi

Sports Brief earlier reported that former Super Eagles star, Alloy Agu offered his advice to Finidi ahead of next month's matches.

The former Real Betis star is taking over a team he knows too well, as he was part of Jose Peseiro's backroom staff for almost two years.

Agu has urged Finidi to stick with the team that played at the 2023 AFCON and if he was to make changes, these had to be minimal.
