The 2023/24 Premier League title race will go down to the final day, with Manchester City and Arsenal set to battle it out for this year’s English top-flight title on May 19.

City have a game against Tottenham Hotspur tomorrow, and the Gunners are hoping their city rivals will stop Pep Guardiola’s side to balance the advantage.

If Arsenal and City win their remaining games, City will be champions for the fourth consecutive time, and Mikel Arteta’s side's wait for a first title since 2004 will continue.

Sports Brief looks at the four times clubs needed help from rivals to win the title.

Four times Premier League club needed help from rivals

1. 2009/10 - Man United needed Liverpool to beat/draw Chelsea

The Red Devils needed Liverpool to take points off Chelsea in the race for the 2009/10 season, but they could not. Per Sun Sport, in one of his famous blunders against the Blues, Steven Gerrard’s back pass allowed Drogba to score and take all three points. Carlo Ancelotti’s men wrapped it up with an 8-0 final day win over Wigan.

2. 2002/03 - Man United needed Leeds to beat Arsenal

According to manutd.com, the rivalry between Manchester United and Leeds United is called the Roses rivalry. Sir Alex Ferguson’s side needed their rivals to beat Arsenal at the Highbury Stadium to win the title, and they did just that with a 3-2 victory.

3. 1998/99 - Arsenal needed Tottenham to draw Man United

The 98/99 PL season went to the final day and the Gunners needed Spurs to get at least a draw at Old Trafford to help them win the title. Tottenham scored first, giving false hope to their rivals, before David Beckham and Andy Cole netted to win it for the Red Devils.

4. 1994/95 - Man United need Liverpool to beat Blackburn

The first time, the favour was done, but the club that needed it could not help themselves. United needed Northwest rivals Liverpool to beat Blackburn, and they did 2-1, but Ferguson’s side drew 1-1 against West Ham.

Kai Havertz backs Tottenham

Sports Brief reported on Kai Havertz declaring support for Tottenham Hotspur against Manchester City after helping Arsenal beat Manchester United.

The German forward admitted all Gunners’ stars are Spurs fans when their rivals host the Manchester club on Tuesday evening, a match that will balance the title race.
