Chelsea would be comfortably set to play in the Champions League next season if the Premier League season started on Boxing Day.

The Blues have had a mixed run of form and performances this season under Mauricio Pochettino.

The 2021 Champions League winners currently find themselves chasing a Europa League spot after managing just 57 points in 36 games.

Pochettino's charges have picked up a paltry 16 wins in those fixtures, with 11 other games ending in defeats.

However, it has emerged that Chelsea's slow start to the season is largely responsible for their underwhelming position in the standings.

Chelsea's impressive form post Boxing Day

According to stats crunched by Squawka, the West Londoners could be sitting fourth in the Premier League table if the season started on Boxing Day.

Chelsea are among the four teams that have picked up the most points since Christmas Day, alongside Liverpool, Arsenal, and Manchester City.

The Poch-tutored side have managed an encouraging 35 points since the period, just four points less than Liverpool's 39.

City have managed the most points (51) among the four teams, while the Gunners have racked up 43 points.

Chelsea's latest triumph came on Saturday, May 11, when they edged Nottingham Forest 3-2 at City Ground.

According to Goal, the match saw Reece James come off the bench to assist one of the three goals.

The Stamford Bridge dwellers will be back in action against Brighton on Wednesday before hosting Bournemouth next Sunday, May 19, in their final game of the season.

Why Chelsea should keep Pochettino

Earlier, Sports Brief analysed five reasons why Chelsea should stick with Pochettino beyond this season.

The Argentine has come under immense scrutiny in his first season in charge of the Blues.

While he continues to face an uncertain future, a section of fans has in the past called for his sacking.
