Jose Mourinho is reportedly open to making a sensational return to Manchester United to replace underfire manager, Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman is facing an uphill task to keep his job at Old Trafford following a frankly disastrous season under his tutelage.

United have managed just 16 wins in 36 Premier League games, leaving them in danger of missing European football next season.

The Red Devils' disappointing run hit a new low on Monday night, May 6, after they were thrashed 4-0 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

A double from Michael Olise in either half, and a goal apiece from Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchelle, sealed a comfortable win for the Eagles.

SPORTbible reports that the result once again saw ten Hag come under heavy scrutiny, with a section of fans and pundits demanding his sacking.

Mourinho angling for Man United return

Reports now claim that Mourinho is keeping tabs on the proceedings at the Theatre of Dreams, and the Portuguese is keen on making a return.

According to Manchester Evening News, the former Chelsea boss would love another go at the Manchester club.

Mourinho spent close to three years with the Red Devils between May 2016 and December 2018 and went on to win the EFL Cup and Europa League, alongside a second place in the Premier League.

However, he is currently without a job following his sacking at AS Roma back in January.

Meanwhile, Thomas Tuchel and England boss, Gareth, Southgate are among the names that have been touted as possible replacements for ten Hag.

5 ways ten Hag has proven he deserves to be sacked

In a related report, Sports Brief also analysed five poor decisions by ten Hag that were proof enough that he deserved to be shown the door.

Man United, under the Dutchman's guidance, have dropped down the EPL table and their chances of European football are at a genuine risk.
