Manchester United's worst Premier League finishes

1. Man United finish 7th in 2023-24 season

Manchester United have finished outside the top 5 in the Premier League four times since the tournament's inception in 1992. All of those finishes have come after Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.

Their worst finish in the English top flight came in the 2013-14 season when they ended up in seventh place.

Following Ferguson's exit, David Moyes took over as manager of United, and that hiring didn't go according to plan for the Red Devils.

He was sacked by the club only 10 months after succeeding Ferguson, per the BBC. United gave Moyes his marching orders with four matches still remaining in the season.

United were in seventh place when Moyes was fired. Under his watch, the Red Devils lost six league matches at home.

They finished the season with 64 points, recording 19 wins, seven draws, and 12 losses. They trailed champions Manchester City by 22 points in the final league table.

Apart from City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Everton, and Tottenham Hotspur also finished above United in the standings.

2. Man United finish 6th in 2016-17 season

Many expected United to contend for the Premier League title in the 2016-17 season after the club appointed Jose Mourinho to be their manager.

'The Special One' did deliver silverware to United, leading them to the championship in both the EFL Cup and Europa League.

Success in the Premier League proved difficult to attain, though, with the Red Devils finishing sixth that year. They ended up with 69 points, recording 18 wins, 15 draws, and five losses in the 38-game season.

They trailed champions Chelsea by 24 points at the end of the season. Tottenham, Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal also finished above United in the standings.

3. Man United finish 6th in 2018-19 season

United had high hopes for the 2018-19 campaign after they finished second in the league the previous season.

Unfortunately for them, the Red Devils got off to a horrible start, which led to the club sacking Mourinho in December 2018.

They lost five times in their first 17 league games, including a 3-1 defeat against Liverpool days before the Portuguese tactician was fired, per CNN.

United weren't able to recover from that poor start, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men finishing sixth in the league table. They ended up with 66 points, recording 19 wins, nine draws, and 10 losses in the 38-game season.

They trailed champions, Manchester City, by a whopping 32 points at the end of the 2018-19 campaign. Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, and Arsenal also finished above the Red Devils in the standings.

Man United finish sixth in 2021-22 season

United last finished outside the top 5 in the Premier League in the 2021-22 season.

They finished with just 58 points, their worst tally in the Premier League era. Solskjaer started the season as United manager, but a run of five losses in seven matches from September to November ended his reign at Old Trafford.

They trailed Manchester City by 35 points at the end of the 2021-22 season. Liverpool, Chelsea, Spurs, and Arsenal also finished above United in the standings.

Olise leads Palace past United in rout

Sports Brief recently reported on Manchester United's loss to Crystal Palace.

The Red Devils had no answer for Michael Olise, who scored twice for Palace.

He netted in the 12th minute before completing his brace in the second half.
