Reus, 34, made the announcement in an emotional video on Friday, May 3, as he confirmed his exit will come upon expiry of his current contract.

The announcement marked the end of an era for a player who has become synonymous with Dortmund over the years. He stayed with the club through difficult spells despite many of his close colleagues, like Ilkay Gundogan, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Robert Lewandowski, securing transfers elsewhere.

Marco Reus' background

Born in North Rhine-Westphalia, Reus started playing for his hometown club Post SV Dortmund in 1994 and joined the youth ranks of Borussia Dortmund in 1996.

In the summer of 2006, after climbing up the ranks in Dortmund’s youth system, Reus joined the Rot Weiss Ahlen U-19 team and broke into the first team a year later. The team was playing in the German third division at the time.

Borussia Mönchengladbach came calling in 2009, handing Reus a four-year contract, and this is where his attributes as a world-class player began to show. In 2012, Borussia Dortmund re-signed him for €17.1 million, and he has been with the club to date.

Most loyal players in Europe’s top 5 leagues

Reus’ 11 years and 10 months with the die Schwarzgelben makes him one of the most loyal servants of any club in the Bundesliga. In fact, the winger ranks ninth in the list of top 10 most loyal players in the German top flight. Bayern Munich's Thomas Muller tops this list.

Across Europe's top 5 leagues, Reus is eclipsed by some other big names as far as club loyalty is concerned.

Jose Mourinho eyeing Bayern job

In other news, Sports Brief reported on Jose Mourinho’s links to Bayern Munich.

The Portuguese tactician is said to be interested in the Bayern job, with Thomas Tuchel set to depart at the end of the 2023/24 campaign.

Mourinho was shown the door at the Rome-based club back in January after a string of unconvincing results.
