The Super Eagles could be getting a permanent head coach ahead of the crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification series against South Africa, according to reports.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has been on the lookout for a fitting manager for the team since the departure of Jose Peseiro, who left his role following the expiration of his contract.
However, as the search continues and an announcement beckons, a recent report indicates that the NFF's technical committee has decided against appointing Emmanuel Amunike, who was previously seen as a frontrunner. Instead, they seem inclined towards appointing another indigenous coach.
NFF discards Amunike
The report, courtesy of Nigeria football expert, Osasu Obayiuwana, states that a high-ranking member of the technical committee, who pleaded to speak anonymously, disclosed that the NFF are no longer considering the appointment of Amunike, as opposed to the widely speculated reports.

The veteran journalist also suggested that the possibility of Finidi George being named manager of the Super Eagles has been gaining strength.
Finidi, who was assistant to Peseiro during his 22-month stint, was initially tipped to be assistant to Amunike. However, with this development, it seems likely that the Enyimba FC coach will be named the permanent manager.
The 52-year-old previously took charge of the Nigerian team during the March international window, and despite mixed results recorded against Ghana and Mali, the NFF technical committee appears pleased with the team's performance and are keen to appoint him as head coach on a permanent basis.
