The president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, disclosed the huge profit the organisation made at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Earlier this year, the number one football competition in Africa was held in Ivory Coast, with 24 countries participating.

Fifty-two matches were played in six venues as the host lifted the trophy after defeating Nigeria in the final in February.

In a recent interview, according to France 24, as per Soccernet, Motsepe confirmed that the organisation made a significant rise in profit compared to the 33rd edition of AFCON in Cameroon.

The South African football administrator confirmed that the amount increased from $4 million in 2021 to $80 million in 2023.

"The AFCON in Ivory Coast has been the most profitable ever. We have made over $80 million. That's the profit. If we look at previous editions, we made around $4 million," he said.
"So we've jumped to $80 million, and a huge chunk of that money is going to the 54 countries for football development."

The next edition of the competition is expected to generate more profit for the African football governing body, which hopes to continue investing in the round leather game's development across the continent.

The 35th edition of the tournament will take place in Morocco in 2025.

CAF president reacts to Eto'o's defamation claims

Sports Brief earlier reported on Motsepe addressing the issue between CAF and Cameroon and Barcelona legend Samuel Eto'o.

Eto'o, who currently heads the Cameroonian Football Federation, was reported to have accused CAF of defamation after investigations were opened into allegations of corruption at FECAFOOT.

While Eto'o's legal team have reported CAF to FIFA, Dr Motsepe disclosed that the continent's football governing body is acting according to the ethics of the confederation.
