The saga surrounding the coaching position for the Super Eagles has taken an intriguing turn, catching many fans and stakeholders off guard.

Just as speculation swirled about the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) narrowing down their search for the perfect candidate, a surprising development has emerged.

The three-time Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winners have been without a permanent manager since the departure of Jose Peseiro following the expiration of his contract at the end of February.

A flurry of elite managers has continued to be linked with the Nigerian team vacancy. However, in the most unexpected of twists, a report has surfaced of coach Peseiro being considered for a surprise return to managing the Nigerian team.

Is Peseiro set to return as Super Eagles coach?

According to a report from media outlet OwnGoalNigeria, the NFF are considering reappointing the Portuguese manager to the role he left last February.

The report indicates that talks were held with the representative of the 63-year-old, and the conversation concluded positively for both parties.

Despite not every member of the Football Federation's hierarchy agreeing to these talks of a return for the former Sporting CP manager, the compromise reached regarding remuneration makes his return as coach of the Nigerian team feasible, as per the report.

Following the swirling report of a possible return for the Portuguese, a flurry of fans have taken to social media to air their thoughts.

Fans' reaction to possible Peseiro return

@Xandereel commented:

"It seems the man couldn't land a job elsewhere, so he wants to return. He probably thinks he's become the next Pep or Mourinho after winning a silver medal in AFCON."

@ini_obong2, visibly unhappy, also posted:

"What's wrong with you all and the NFF? Why does the Nigerian Football Federation lack direction and purpose?"

@Don17488409 also reacted:

"They shouldn't even consider it. He's a boring defensive coach. If he's so good, let him coach another country."

Nigerians take to the streets to support Amunike

Sports Brief also previously reported Super Eagles fans backing Amunike as the next manager, taking to the streets of Nigeria to express their desire to see him appointed.

The supporters filled the streets, carrying placards that highlighted the 53-year-old's achievements and providing numerous reasons why he should lead Nigeria next.
