The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are evidently working diligently to secure a manager for the Super Eagles ahead of their crucial FIFA World Cup qualification series in June.

The national team have been without a permanent manager since the departure of Jose Peseiro and several top-tier candidates have been linked with the vacant coaching role.

Earlier reports had suggested the NFF had narrowed down their list to three foreign finalists, with Antonio Conceicao, Danny Buijs, and Domenec Torrent reportedly at the top.

However, a recent report from OwnGoalNigeria has stated that the NFF has reversed its decision and shifted its focus to appointing Emmanuel Amunike as Nigeria's next manager.

Has NFF made Amunike U-turn?

According to the report, the President of the NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, has opted for the appointment of Amunike due to immense pressure from members of the football federation's technical committee.

The report states that while the federation boss is still holding out for a foreign manager, multiple members of the technical committee have expressed their desire to have an indigenous manager.

The cost-effectiveness of appointing a local coach appears to be a significant factor, as the NFF have continued to maintain their stance that available remunerations will not be beyond $50,000.

However, the report concludes by stating that the former Barcelona winger would be given a backroom staff which would include Finidi George as assistant coach, Emeka Amadi as goalkeeper trainer, and Michael Nsien as a member of the team's technical setup.

Some of these names were in the mix for the main coaching role but now are seemingly set to work under Amunike to help the Super Eagles secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigerians take to the streets to support Amunike

Sports Brief also previously reported Super Eagles fans backing Amunike as the next manager, taking to the streets of Nigeria to express their desire to see him appointed.

The supporters filled the streets, carrying placards that highlighted the 53-year-old's achievements and providing numerous reasons why he should lead Nigeria next.
