As Nigeria’s crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification fixture against South Africa draws near, all seems set, except for the missing piece; the tactical mastermind who will lead the team onto the field.

The Super Eagles have been without a coach since the departure of former manager, Jose Peseiro, whose contract expired at the end of February.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have continued to delay announcing a suitable replacement for the Portuguese coach, causing concerns among fans and stakeholders of the Super Eagles.

However, swirling reports indicate that the Football Federation could be close to naming a new manager for the team.

Amid these reports, a member of the technical committee has hinted at the qualities the next Super Eagles coach must possess.

NFF chief speaks on qualities of next Nigeria coach

In an interview reported by the media outlet Score Nigeria, a member of the technical committee, Felix Owolabi, highlighted the essential qualities the next coach should have:

"We need someone very intelligent and knowledgeable about the game, who has experienced it all as a player at local, national, and international levels. They must possess a commanding personality that is respected by players.
To lead the Super Eagles, the coach must have integrity, earning the respect of the players. Their CV should speak for itself. Additionally, there should be an understanding that such a person will value the local league, which is crucial for the future and destiny of our football."

The words of the 68-year-old appear to subtly hint at who the committee could be considering as the next coach of the Super Eagles, especially considering that many of the managers currently linked with the job seem to fall short of these standards.

Nevertheless, Nigerians can only hope that whoever takes the helm as the coach of the Nigerian team will excel in their role.

Dutch coach favourite for Super Eagles job

Sports Brief in another report stated that Dutch coach, Danny Buijs, is the perceived favourite to land the Super Eagles role.

The 41-year-old currently manages Eredivisie side, Fortuna Sittard.
