  • Tottenham suffered a 4-0 defeat to Newcastle United on Saturday, April 13
  • It was a difficult afternoon for Spurs defender Micky Van de Ven
  • The Dutchman was left on the floor twice for two of Newcastle’s opening goals

Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven was a laughing stock on social media after a nightmare afternoon against Newcastle United on Saturday, April 13.

Van de ven had previously earned plaudits for an impressive debut with the North Londoners, but had a day to forget at St James’ Park.

He was caught cold for Newcastle’s opening two goals as both Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon left him on the ground before finding the back of the net.

For the first goal, Van de Ven slipped after getting turned by an in-form Isak, who fired the hosts into the lead in the 30th minute.

Two minutes later and the 22-year old suffered a similar fate, hitting the turf as Gordon doubled his side’s lead going into half time.

The former Wolfsburg star was an instant hit on social media after his first half showing, but it was for all the wrong reasons as cheeky football fans created memes out of him.

One of the memes shared online was in reference to Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip in 2014 which ultimately cost Liverpool in the title race.

Rio Ferdinand, who was full of praise for the £43m man, was also left with an egg on the face, and admitted Van de ven struggled in the first half.

“We talked about how good he’s been this season, but today is that’s a 45 minutes to forget,” Ferdinand said, according to GOAL.
“It is a great bit of skill from your Isak but you’ve got to slow your feet down to defend.”

Newcastle secure 4-0 win

It got worse for Ange Postecoglou’s side in the second half as Eddie Howe’s Newcastle was simply too good. Isak added his second of the day with another clinical finish, with Fabian Schar rounding off the scoring with a header from Gordon’s cross.

According to BBC, defeat leaves Tottenham in fifth place with 60 points, level with fourth-placed Aston Villa, who could pull away with a positive result against Arsenal.
