  • Over 100 coaches have applied to become the next Super Eagles coach
  • Nigeria has been without a coach since Jose Peseiro’s departure in February

Nigeria's protracted hunt for a new national team coach is about to end as the Nigeria Football Federation's Technical Committee is set to select a new coach for the Super Eagles.

The Technical Committee, headed by Augustine Eguavoen, will meet on Tuesday, April 16, in Abuja to name Nigeria’s next coach following the exit of Jose Peseiro in January.

According to the Daily Post, the committee has already shortlisted seven coaches for the vacant position with former internationals Finidi George and Emmanuel Amuneke the two leading candidates for the position.

It was reported that over 100 coaches from across the world had applied for the vacant position including former Cameroon gaffer Antonio Cobceicao, who is keen on the Nigeria job.

Former Zambia and Ivory Coast coach, Herve Renard, and South Africa’s Pitso Mosimane were also reportedly linked with the Super Eagles' vacant position in the past.

Nigeria to host South Africa in Uyo

Meanwhile, the NFF has confirmed that the Super Eagles will host South Africa's Bafana Bafana in a key 2026 World Cup qualifier on Friday, June 7, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Score Nigeria reports.

Nigeria have failed to win their first two qualifiers and are condemned to get a win against Hugo Broos’ side to keep their hosts of qualifying for the World Cup alive.

The game will be the Super Eagles' first encounter against South Africa since eliminating Bafana Bafana via a dramatic penalty shootout at the semifinal of the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast.

Late appointment of coach worries players

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that the coaching chaos surrounding the Super Eagles is causing quite a stir in the nation's footballing society, particularly among national team players.

Since Peseiro's departure in February, as many as six Super Eagles players have expressed concern over the NFF's delayed recruitment process for the new Nigeria coach.

These players emphasized the significance of resolving the coaching crisis on time so that the newly appointed manager has enough time to prepare the Super Eagles ahead of the crucial FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Republic of Benin.
