  • Kaizer Chiefs last won a trophy in 2014/15 when they won the ABSA Premiership that season
  • The Amakhosi came close to winning the league and cup double in 2019 under Ernst Middendorp
  • Stuart Baxter was the last Chiefs manager to win a trophy but failed in his second stint as coach

It’s almost 10 years since Kaizer Chiefs have lifted the last trophy.

The Amakhosi won the ABSA Premiership in 2012/15 under Stuart Baxter's stewardship, but things have never been the same since his first departure.

The Amakhosi have failed to replicate that success despite bringing in numerous coaches to find the winning recipe.

Cavin Johnson has lost six games and only won five during his time as Kaizer Chiefs' interim manager.

Since the last trophy win, Chiefs have hired eight coaches. Sports Brief looks at the men tasked with turning things around and how they fared.

Chiefs’ eight managers since last trophy win

Steve Komphela

The current Lamontville Golden Arrows manager was the first to take over the reins since Baxter left.

Komphela looked like he would add more silverware to the trophy cabinet, but Chiefs lost the MTN 8 final against Ajax Cape Town.

He stepped down as manager in April 2018 following their 2-0 loss against Free State Stars in the Nedbank Cup, the club’s website confirmed.

Komphela was in charge of the Amakhosi for 112 games before he departed.

Giovanni Solinas

The Italian’s tenure in charge of Chiefs didn’t last long.

Solinas replaced Komphela at the helm but only lasted for 20 games before he was sacked.

During that time, he managed just seven wins and six losses, but some felt he wasn't given enough time at the South African side.

Ernst Middendorp

The German manager was brought in for a second term in the middle of the 2018/19 season, almost bringing some success back to the Naturena.

Midddendorp’s Chiefs lost in the 2019 Nedbank Cup final against TS Galaxy and also failed to win the 2019/20 league.

The Amakhosi needed a victory on the final day of the season to secure the league title, but could only manage a draw, GOAL reported.

Gavin Hunt

Hunt has enjoyed great success with SuperSport United, but he couldn’t replicate that at Chiefs.

Like Solinas, Hunt didn’t last an entire season in charge of the team before he was sacked.

IOL noted that Hunt was sacked after an inconsistent stint in charge of the team. He was fired with the Amakhosi closer to the relegation zone than they were to league leaders, Mamelodi Sundowns.

Stuart Baxter

Chiefs were hoping to find success with a familiar face when they brought in Baxter for another term.

The Scotsman’s second stint didn’t go as planned. He only lasted 25 games before he was shown the door.

He won 11 games and suffered nine defeats in his second stint.

Arthur Zwane

When Baxter was removed from his post, Zwane took over the side on an interim basis. He was then handed the reins after fans urged the club to give him a chance.

Their love affair with 10111 didn’t last long, and following a loss to SuperSport United, fans pelted Zwane with objects, FarPost reported.

He was sacked after just 37 matches.

Molefi Ntseki

Fans were not happy when Ntseki was named as the new manager.

Many believed he didn’t have the credentials to lead the side, and they were soon proven right.

Ntseki won just four games and lost six before he and the club parted ways in October 2023. He was also subject to abuse by fans who threw objects at him during his tenure.

Cavin Johnson

While only an interim manager, Johnson has already been in charge for 15 games this season.

He’s won just five of these 15 games, drawn four and lost six. Chiefs are also out of the running for trophies and risk finishing outside the top eight.

The Amakhosi are in eighth place, but five teams below them are one win away from leapfrogging them.

Kaizer Chiefs Set to Appoint New Coach

Kaizer Chiefs' Sporting Director has broken some news that could excite fans or make them more worried.

Motaung Jr announced that the Amakhosi will have a new head coach and technical structure for the next season.

Numerous names have tried to return the club to its glory days, but they all failed, Sports Brief previously reported.
