  • Numerous Nigerian players have been in stellar form since the start of the 2023-24 season
  • Several others have grown into the form they were known for before the start of this term
  • Sports Brief has listed the most improved Nigerian players during the current campaign

The current football season has been a tumultuous journey for many Nigerian players so far.

While some, like Ademola Lookman, have seamlessly continued their stellar performance from the previous season, others, such as Samuel Chukwueze, experienced a temporary setback in form but showed resilience in bouncing back.

Nevertheless, amid these fluctuations, a handful of Super Eagles players have shone brightly as the most improved this season.

Among them stands Udinese star, Maduka Okoye. The goalkeeper’s journey from the bench to a starting position has been nothing short of remarkable.

Recognising such strides, Sports Brief has highlighted some of the standout Nigerian players who have significantly raised their game this season.

Most improved Nigerian players this season

Maduka Okoye

The 24-year-old stands out as the most improved Nigerian player of the 2023-24 season.

The Dutch-born shot-stopper has successfully overcome the adversaries and dip in form he suffered following the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to again rise and show he is one of the best Nigerian goalkeepers currently available.

The former Watford star has successfully displaced veteran shot-stopper, Marco Silvestri, to become the first-choice goalkeeper of Gabriele Coffi's side.

Since displacing the veteran, Okoye has gone on to keep three clean sheets in his 14 appearances for the Italian side, according to data courtesy of Fotmob.

Cyriel Dessers

The Glasgow Rangers striker is another Nigerian in really impressive form this season.

The Belgian-born forward has improved on his lacklustre 2022-23 campaign that saw him record just 13 goal involvements in 32 games, and now boasts an impressive 23 goals in 45 appearances so far for Rangers, according to data courtesy of Fotmob.

Dessers' impressive form has seen him earn a recall to the Nigerian national team, and the forward celebrated his return with a goal against Ghana.

The 29-year-old has developed into an integral part of Phillipe Clement's side and will be crucial in their pursuit of the Scottish Premiership crown.

Victor Boniface

The Bayer Leverkusen forward is another player who has seen his form spike uncontrollably since his transfer to the Bundesliga.

The 23-year-old, whose side is on the verge of winning the German league crown, has been involved in 26 goals this season in only 25 games despite his lengthy injury layoff. Boniface's numbers are a far improvement on the tally he recorded at Belgian outfit, Union St Gilloise.

According to data courtesy of Fotmob, the forward has almost equalled his goal tally despite playing in less than half of the 51 appearances he made last season.

Following his return from injury, Boniface will be looking to spur Leverkusen to an unprecedented treble with his goal-scoring prowess.

Akor Adams

The dynamic forward is another Nigerian player who deserves recognition for his stellar form at Montpellier.

Since his transfer from Norwegian club, Lillestrom, the 24-year-old has been involved in 11 goals in his debut campaign with the Ligue 1 outfit.

Adams' goals have been crucial in ensuring that coach, Michel Der Zakarian's side steer clear of the murky relegation waters of the French league.

Montpellier fans will undoubtedly hope that the forward continues his form as they aim to secure the highest possible position in the Ligue 1 standings.

Lookman explains reason behind impressive form

Sports Brief also reported on Nigerian forward, Ademola Lookman explaining his current form with Atalanta.

The 26-year-old has highlighted the impact of his managers as a huge factor behind his impressive displays.
