Luke Fleurs: South African Police Arrest 6 Suspects Over Death of Kaizer Chiefs Star

No fewer than six suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of Kaizer Chiefs defender Luke Fleurs.

The footballer was fatally shot on Wednesday, April 3, while his VW Golf 8 GTI was taken away by the gunmen.

It was reported that the tragic incident took place at a petrol station in Honeydew while the 24-year-old waited for his turn.

Police have confirmed the arrest of six suspects who were trailed to Slovoville in Soweto, in the early hours of Wednesday.

Security operatives have also recovered the car which was already stripped.

Spokesperson Lt-Col Mavela Masondo said, as per Times Live:

“It is reported that the victim, who was driving a red VW Golf 8 GTI, drove into the petrol station in 14th Avenue at the corner of Hendrik Potgieter.
“While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant he was confronted by two armed men driving a white BMW 1 Series.
"The suspects pointed a firearm at him and pulled him out of his vehicle, then shot him once in the upper body.
"One suspect drove off with the victim's car followed by his accomplice. The victim was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival.”

According to Masondo, the arrested suspects are members of a carjacking syndicate operating in Gauteng.

Security operatives have also launched a search to identify and arrest more of the assailants. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Roodepoort magistrate's court on Friday.

McCarthy pays tribute to Fleurs

Sports Brief earlier reported that Manchester United's first-team coach, Benni McCarthy also paid tribute to Fleurs who was tragically killed in a hijacking.

Following his tragic passing, tributes have been pouring in from across the footballing world for the former SuperSport United youngster.

McCarthy described the incident as tragic while offering his condolences to the family.
