  • Liverpool wasted a plethora of chances against Man United this past weekend
  • Erik ten Hag's Red Devils continued their trend of allowing many shots on goal
  • The two rivals are not in the top 10 of the most efficient PL teams this season

Liverpool had everything they needed to beat Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday, but their wastefulness cost them maximum points despite their opponents allowing them many shots.

The Reds took 28 shots but could only score a goal from open play. The other came from a controversial penalty after Aaron Wan-Bissaka was adjudged to have fouled Harvey Elliott.

Sports Brief looks at the top 5 Premier League teams with the best conversion rates via Transfermarkt.

Premier League's best conversion rate

1. Newcastle United

Eddie Howe's men are the best converter in the league this season. The Magpies have taken 540 shots, 402 of which were at goal and scored 65 goals. Their conversion rate stands at 12%, the highest in the league. They are eighth on the table and have injuries to blame.

2. Aston Villa

The Villans have been on the rise since Unai Emery replaced Steven Gerrard. They have taken 563 shots in the league this season, 432 of which have been directed at goal, and they have scored 66 goals. They boast a conversion rate of 11.5% and sit fifth on the table.

3. Arsenal

The league leaders are the third most efficient team. 502 of their 667 shots have been on goal. Their 75 goals is a league-high, with a conversion rate of 11.2%. Per Opta, they spent 247 days at the summit of the table last season but failed to win and will hope to avoid a repeat of that this season despite spending fewer days.

4. Tottenham Hotspur

The North London team have been a different side under the tutelage of new manager Ange Postecoglou. 460 of their 619 shots have been on goal. A 10.5% conversion rate produced 65 goals. They sit fourth on the table and hope to return to the UEFA Champions League next season.

5. West Ham

Only four teams have taken fewer shots than West Ham in the league this season, yet they have the fifth-best conversion rate. The Hammers have taken 498 shots, 355 on goal and scored 52 goals at 10.4%. They are seventh on the log.

Manchester City are the only other team with a conversion rate above 10%, while Liverpool, despite taking the most shots with 863, have converted at 8.3%.

Premier League's coldest celebrations

Sports Brief previously analysed the Premier League's coldest celebrations after Mohammed Kudus pulled the steward's chair against Freiburg in the Europa League.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer's freezing celebration is also a highlight of the Blues' disastrous season under Argentine boss Mauricio Pochettino.
