  • Al Ittihad star, Karim Benzema, has netted his first goal of 2024
  • The 36-year-old had not found the back of the net since December 2023
  • His long-awaited strike came against Al Wehda in the Saudi Super Cup

Karim Benzema finally broke his goal-scoring drought with a crucial strike against Al Wehda in the Saudi Super Cup semi-finals.

The French striker had been enduring a tough spell in front of goal but managed to find the back of the net for the first time in the calendar year on Monday, April 8.

Benzema capitalised on a rebound early in the game, seizing the opportunity to unleash a powerful shot into the top right corner within just a minute of kickoff.

When was the last time Benzema scored?

Prior to his goal against Al Wehda in the Super Cup, which opened the scoring, Benzema had gone eight consecutive matches without finding the net for the Tigers.

His last goal came on December 15, 2023, in a 3-1 defeat against Egyptian club Al Ahly in the quarter-final of the 2023 FIFA Club World Cup, as noted by Eurosport.

Since then, the former Real Madrid talisman has struggled to replicate his usual prolific form. He has faced a combination of bad luck, including two missed penalties and a lack of clinical finishing by his own high standards.

Additionally, nagging injuries sidelined the 36-year-old former Ballon d'Or winner for much of early 2024.

Benzema explains goal-scoring obstacles

Prior to breaking his goal-scoring duck, Benzema had candidly addressed the obstacles he's encountered since joining Al-Ittihad in the Saudi League, as reported by Sports Brief.

After Ittihad's goalless draw with Al Taawoun, the Frenchman reflected on his recent performance, attributing his dip in form to the adjustments required in a different league with unfamiliar teammates.

“Yes, because it is not the same game. It's not the same players. I need help. I need someone to help me on the pitch. I can't win one game alone. I need other players and a lot of things!” he stated.
