Sports Brief looks at the five African players leading Bayer Leverkusen to a historic double in Germany.
5 Africans starring for Bayer Leverkusen
Victor Boniface - Nigeria
The Nigerian returned from an injury that he picked up before the Africa Cup of Nations to make a cameo in the DFB-Pokal semi-final win over Dusseldorf. He also scored in the title-clinching game against Werder Bremen.
Before suffering the setback, the former Union Saint Gilloise player has been the star of the show for Leverkusen, scoring and providing assists effortlessly. Boniface has scored 18 goals and provided 9 assists across all competitions, per Transfermarkt.
Nathan Tella - Nigeria
Boniface's compatriot, Tella, did not make the squad for AFCON but that seemed to have been a blessing in disguise, as he became a mainstay in the Leverkusen team, scoring important goals.
The Nigerian joined Leverkusen last summer following Southampton's relegation from the Premier League and has already netted six goals and provided three assists in all competitions.

FootballEdmund Tapsoba - Burkina Faso
Tapsoba has been a rock for Alonso in defence. The Burkina Faso international has racked in 36 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals in the Europa League. He joined the German outfit in 2020 and remains one of the most experienced players at the club.
Odilon Kossounou - Ivory Coast
This year is turning out to be the Ivorian's best campaign. Fresh off winning the Africa Cup of Nations, Kossounou could add two more titles to his name at the end of the season. His time with Ivory Coast at AFCON meant he missed a number of games in the league, but his 18 appearances in the Bundesliga has been key to Alonso's success.
Amine Adli - Morocco
The attacking midfielder has been a creative spark in Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen team. There might be mentions of Boniface, Jeremie Frimpong, and others but Adli has been somewhat of the unsung hero. He has scored eight goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions.
