  • Chuba Akpom is constantly snubbed by the Super Eagles coaches
  • The Ajax star switched allegiance from England to Nigeria in 2021
  • Akpom has scored 13 goals in 30 appearances for Ajax this season

Chuba Akpom's agent has opened up on why the Ajax striker is continuously snubbed from getting an invite to the Super Eagles despite his rich vein of form for the Eredivisie club.

The 28-year-old forward, who switched his allegiance to Nigeria in 2021 after representing England’s youth teams, has constantly been overlooked by Nigeria’s coaches for international call-ups.

According to Own Goal Nigeria, Akpom’s representative claimed former Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro was not keen on having the Ajax forward in his team and would not consider giving him a look in.

"The first contact happened after the season he had at Middlesbrough, but then his Nigerian passport wasn't ready and when he finally got one, Peseiro was informed but he didn't fancy having him in his team but there was enough time, and all he has to do is to maintain his current run of form for his club", Akpom’s agent said.

Akpom was overlooked for Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast and was not called up for the Super Eagles international friendly games in March against Ghana and Mali.

Akpom insists on Ajax stay

Meanwhile, Akpom has insisted he would love to remain with Ajax for at least another season despite reported interest in him from several English Premier League clubs, Punch NG reports.

The 28-year-old forward, who started his career with Arsenal, stated that he remains committed to the Dutch giants and would not be keen to return to England any time soon.

Following a rough start in Amsterdam, Akpom has shown glimpses of his brilliance, scoring 13 goals in 30 games across all competitions for Ajax.

Akpom shifts focus to family

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Akpom spent the international break in London, UK, opting to take time with his family after being snubbed by the Super Eagles once again.

Having recently pledged his allegiance to Nigeria after representing England at various youth levels, Akpom has been eager to don the green and white of the West African nation.

However, despite his availability, the 28-year-old has never received a call-up since 2019.
