  • The Super Eagles have once again not called up Chuba Akpom
  • The Ajax forward has yet to receive a Nigeria call-up since 2019
  • The 26-year-old will miss the Super Eagles’ ties vs Ghana and Mali

AFC Ajax striker, Chuba Akpom, will spend the upcoming international break in London, UK, opting to take time with his family after being snubbed by the Super Eagles once again.

Having recently pledged his allegiance to Nigeria after representing England at various youth levels, Akpom has been eager to don the green and white of the African nation.

However, despite his availability, the 26-year-old has never received a call-up since 2019.

He will miss the team's upcoming friendlies against Ghana and Mali.

Despite a challenging season in the Netherlands, where he has struggled to replicate his form from his time at Middlesbrough, the forward has managed to notch seven goals and provide one assist in 18 Eredivisie appearances.

While his teammates prepare to join their national teams, Akpom has chosen to return to London to regroup and focus on overcoming Ajax's recent struggles. He Akpom expressed the importance of mental calmness and clarity in overcoming challenges.

“I'm going back to London and spending time with my family because it's been difficult for us all. We need to calm down mentally and clear our heads so that we can end the season on a positive note,” he said, as quoted by Ajax Life.

Despite his exclusion from the national team setup, Akpom showcased his talent over the weekend, contributing a goal and an assist off the bench in Ajax's 2-2 draw with Sparta Rotterdam, as reported by Vavel.

Acknowledging the stiff competition within the Nigerian attacking ranks, he remains determined to earn his place in the national team fold. With established names such as Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, and Taiwo Awoniyi ahead of him, he understands the challenge but remains focused on showcasing his abilities.

Akpom nets brace in win over Reading

Sports Brief in April 2023 reported that Akpom scored for Middlesbrough beat Reading 5-0 in a Championship battle.

He had been in excellent form, with many fans even discussing him playing in the Premier League this year.

Some believed that the striker should be playing in the England topflight division, not second-tier football.
