  • Victor Boniface says being out injured for months was difficult
  • The Leverkusen star was ruled out for four months due to injury
  • Boniface made his first Leverkusen appearance since December

Victor Boniface has described his latest injury setback as a difficult period after he spent months on the sidelines when he picked up an adductor injury that kept him out of action.

The 23-year-old forward missed Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign in Ivory Coast despite being named in the final squad, and also Bayer Leverkusen’s Bundesliga title run after being sidelined for four months.

According to Soccernet, Boniface, who made his first appearance for Bayer Leverkusen since December 2023 on Wednesday, has opened up on how difficult the injury was for him.

“To be honest, it was very difficult, you know. I got injured in preparations to represent my country and the timing was bad because Leverkusen really needed me, but I had my teammates, I had the coach, and everyone in the club was there for me, so it was good.”

Boniface made a substitute appearance as Bayer Leverkusen booked their spot in the DFB-Pokal final after they cruised to a 4-0 victory against Fortuna Dusseldorf.

Alonso delighted with Boniface’s comeback

Meanwhile, Xabi Alonso has said having Boniface back after a four-month injury layoff is a big boost for Bayer Leverkusen as they push to win the treble this season in Germany, Complete Sports reports.

Boniface played just over 30 minutes after coming on for Patrick Schick in the 66th minute during Leverkusen’s DFB-Pokal victory against Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday night.

Boniface registered 16 goals and seven assists in 25 appearances across all competitions for Die Werkself this season.

Napoli eyeing move for Boniface

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Napoli have set their sights on Boniface as one of the strikers poised to replace compatriot Victor Osimhen at the club next season.

The 23-year-old forward showcased his prowess in the first half of the season for Alonso's side, delivering 10 goals and eight assists in just 15 starts for Die Werkself.

Despite interest from clubs like Arsenal, Bundesliga leaders Leverkusen remain reluctant to part ways with Boniface, unless a bid of approximately €55m surfaces for the talented forward.
