  • Kaizer Chiefs lost 1-0 at home to Stellenbosch FC in the DTSV Premiership
  • Coach, Cavin Johnson, expressed frustration with his team's performance
  • Amakhosi failed to convert chances, highlighting their consistent struggle

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach, Cavin Johnson, has expressed dissatisfaction with his team's display following their 1-0 loss against Stellenbosch FC in the DStv Premiership last night.

Devin Titus netted the solitary goal in first-half stoppage time, extending Stellies' unbeaten streak to 19 games.

Meanwhile, the Glamour Boys' struggles persisted, with only one win in eight matches across all competitions, diminishing their hopes of securing a CAF Champions League spot.

Johnson criticised his team's performance, stressing a need for improvement.

He also pointed out the importance of rectifying errors and improving their play ahead of their upcoming fixture against Chippa United, urging his players to elevate their technical prowess and exhibit more composed ball distribution.

"We just didn’t get it right tonight. I’m not happy with the performance of a lot of the players, but we have to fix them up, we have to try our best. Play proper ball, don’t just kick the ball, and that for me is very disturbing from my players," the caretaker coach said in a post-match interview with SuperSport TV, as reported by iDiski Times.

Despite dominating possession early on, Johnson's men encountered difficulties in the attacking third, allowing the Maroons to capitalise on counter-attacks, particularly exploiting space down the flank.

The second half saw Amakhosi squander opportunities to equalise, ultimately succumbing to defeat as the final whistle blew.

What's next for Stellenbosch and Chiefs?

Stellenbosch's victory solidified their second-place standing in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) standings, while Chiefs languish in seventh, as reported by Goal.

Coach, Steve Barker, will prepare for their upcoming clash against Sekhukhune United on Saturday, April 6, aiming to maintain their momentum.

On the other hand, Johnson will seek redemption as they face Chippa United on the same day, hoping to reverse their recent fortunes.

Chiefs pull out of Stanley Nwabali race

Sports Brief also reported that Chippa slammed a hefty price on Stanley Nwabali, forcing Chiefs to turn away from signing the goalkeeper in the summer.

The 27-year-old attracted interest from several clubs, including Saudi Arabia, after starring for Nigeria at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

Chiefs, one of the leading clubs interested in Nwabali, have backed out of any deal after the PSL side placed a R30 million price tag on Nwabali's head.
