Super Eagles defender, Kenneth Omeruo, has given his explanation for why Nigeria lost to Mali despite being the better team in the second half of the encounter.

The three-time Africa Cup of Nations winners failed to make it two wins in a row under Finidi George as they lost 2-0 to Les Aigles at the Grand Stade de Marrakech.

Goals from El Bilal Toure and Kamarou Doumbia in both halves gave Eric Challe's side the deserved victory over the Super Eagles during their friendly in Morocco.

In an interview with NFF TV, as per Complete Sports, Omeruo claimed it was not a bad game for the Super Eagles and tried to rationalise why they lost the match.

"I think we played a better second half. It wasn't a bad game; we just didn't take our chances, and they scored two goals. Overall, I think we played a good game," he said.
"I think it was a good outing for us; it was a fantastic spirit. The players that were here gave their best. We just couldn't score in the game."

Omeruo was in the starting line-up against Les Aigles after missing the Ghana game due to injury and had a fair amount of blame for Nigeria's loss.

The former Middlesbrough defender misplaced some of his passes and mistimed some of his tackles in the match.

Nigeria's next game will be the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and Benin Republic in June as Finidi hopes to make his position permanent.

Finidi explains why Nigeria lost

Sports Brief also previously reported on Super Eagles coach, Finidi, explaining why Nigeria lost against Mali.

The 52-year-old attributed their defeat to injuries to key strikers, which affected their approach in the game.

Without an established centre-forward to call upon, the Nigerian squad had to rely on an alternate formation.
