  • Moses Simon will be sidelined for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign
  • Simon was stretchered off the pitch in Nigeria’s 2-0 friendly defeat to Mali
  • The Nigerian has scored three goals in 22 Ligue 1 appearances for Nantes

French Ligue 1 club, Nantes, has confirmed that Moses Simon has been ruled out for the rest of the season after the Super Eagles winger suffered a fractured leg in Nigeria’s friendly defeat to Mali.

The 28-year-old forward was stretchered off in the 31st minute during Nigeria’s 2-0 friendly defeat to Mali after colliding with the Malian goalkeeper in a goalscoring attempt.

According to the Daily Post, Nantes confirmed the seriousness of Simon’s injury after they disclosed the Super Eagles winger had suffered a broken fibular after tests were carried out.

“Moses Simon was injured yesterday against Mali. Our Nigerian striker suffers from a broken fibula which means the end of the season,” the club said in a statement.
“FC Nantes is already keen to provide its full support to its attacker and wishes him a speedy recovery!”

Simon, who has scored three goals this season for the relegation-threatened Nantes, will miss the rest of the 2023/24 season due to the injury.

Simon's injury is a setback to Nigeria

Meanwhile, Kenneth Omeruo says the injury to Simon is a setback to the national team after the winger suffered a horrific injury in the Super Eagles' loss to Mali on Tuesday, All Nigeria Soccer reports.

The 28-year-old forward was rushed to the hospital after colliding with Mali’s goalkeeper Samassa in an attempt to give the Super Eagles the lead in the friendly encounter in Morocco.

Simon is now set to miss Nigeria’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against South Africa and the Benin Republic in June.

Simon suffers serious leg injury

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Nigeria suffered more than a defeat against Mali as Nantes winger Simon sustained a severe injury in the game in Morocco.

The former Levante winger started against Les Aigles after coming on as a substitute against Ghana the previous game.

El-Bilal Toure and Kamouri Doumbia scored goals to give Mali a well-deserved victory over the Super Eagles, ending a 49-year run of going winless against the three-time AFCON champions.
