Stanley Tshabalala: more about South African icon

Affectionately known as Bra Stan, Tshabalala holds a revered status in South African football, notably being the first coach to lead Bafana Bafana in an official match.

Born in Orlando East in 1949, his journey into sports began with boxing under the tutelage of renowned Transvaal champion, Jerry Moloi. However, it was his passion for soccer that eventually took precedence.

Recruited into the local team, Orlando Preston Brothers, in 1968, Tshabalala's skills on the field quickly garnered attention. He later became a pivotal figure in the formation of Kaizer Chiefs and earned the moniker ‘Screamer’ due to his vocal presence on the pitch.

His time with Sundowns further solidified his legacy, earning him the nicknames ‘Piano’ and ‘Shoe-shine man' for his innovative style of play, as documented in his Biography.

Subsequently, Bra Stan took on roles as team manager and technical advisor, contributing significantly to the development of South African football.

Returning to Orlando Pirates in 2008 as technical director, Tshabalala played a pivotal role in the team's success, including securing the first and second trebles in the club's history.

Tshabalala responds to Pirates interference allegations

Sports Brief also previously reported on Tshabalala commenting on allegations of interference with team selections for Orlando Pirates.

He went on Gagasi FM’s Extra Time to unconvincingly refute claims that he sometimes went over the coach's head in terms of the squad.
