  • Nigeria is poised to lock horns with Ghana in an international friendly fixture
  • Finidi George is poised to lead the Super Eagles against the Black Stars
  • The 52-year-old has ignored Jose Peseiro’s AFCON formation, per a report

The Super Eagles prepare for their first fixture of the post-Jose Peseiro era, under the leadership of Finidi George.

The 52-year-old, who was assistant to the Portuguese through his 22-month stint as coach, has been handed the reins to lead the Nigerian team for the friendly fixtures against Ghana and Mali.

Ahead of the friendlies slated for the Stade de Marrakech in Morocco, coach Finidi has been vocal about his intent to clinch victories in both friendlies, stressing that the clashes are more than just mere friendlies.

However, it appears the former Real Betis star is following through on his assertions, as a report from media outlet, OwnGoalNigeria, has stated that the interim coach has ditched the 3-4-3 formation that coach Peseiro employed at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast.

Finidi ditches Peseiro’s formation

According to the report, the Super Eagles have continued to train in a 4-3-3 setup, a formation in which the Nigerian team has found success in recent years.

The Nigerian team had utilised a three-player defensive formation during the AFCON after failing to impress with the 3-4-3 under the former Sporting CP gaffer.

Despite the string of positive results recorded with this formation, many fans and stakeholders of the Nigerian team criticised coach Peseiro, for deploying his team in such a manner, arguing that it deviated significantly from the footballing style the Nigerian team had become synonymous with.

However, this bold move from Coach Finidi, highlights the Nigerian team's apparent desire to return to their pre-AFCON formation.

Nonetheless, while many fans of the team will indeed be pleased with this formation shift, it must be noted that a beautiful display and a positive result from the team would also be greatly appreciated.

Finidi sends warning to Ghana

In an earlier report, Sports Brief stated that Nigeria's interim coach, Finidi, has issued a subtle warning to the Ghanaian national team.

The 52-year-old emphasised that his team would not treat the fixture as a mere friendly.

Finidi also affirmed that his side are aiming for victory in the match.
