  • Mohamed Salah has solidified his legacy as one of Africa's greats
  • The Egyptian has won everything at club level with Liverpool FC
  • Sports Brief compares him to icons Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o

In the last few years, Liverpool star Mohamed Salah has solidified himself as one of the best players in Africa.

His goals, record-breaking performances, awards, and trophies have catapulted him to superstardom.

Some feel he has become the greatest African player of all time, while others believe he is in the company of Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o.

Few expected Salah to become a superstar in the Premier League when he joined the Reds in 2017. His career had stagnated after bouncing around England and Italy.

However, he found a coach that got the best out of him. Jurgen Klopp made Salah a key part of his system and allowed the Egyptian to thrive.

Drogba and Eto'o are usually regarded as the greatest African footballers of all-time, but Salah may have closed that gap in the last few seasons.

Mohamed Salah's career

It took some time for Salah to announce his arrival in Europe. After leaving Egyptian side El Mokawloon Club, he joined Swiss giants FC Basel in 2012, kicking off a gruelling journey to the top.

In 2014, he joined Chelsea under Jose Mourinho but struggled to get into the team ahead of Andre Schurrle or Willian. He left in 2015 and went to play for Fiorentina and AS Roma before joining Liverpool.

He made just 13 Premier League appearances for the Blues and scored twice. One of those goals came when Chelsea thrashed Arsenal 6-0.

His first season at Liverpool was magical. In fact, it was a historic season in the Premier League. The 31-year-old became the first player in Premier League history to score 32 goals in a 38-game season. No African has scored more goals (154) than Salah in the Premier League.

In the following five seasons, he scored at least 19 league goals for the Merseyside club. He has won three Golden Boots in the Premier League. Only Thierry Henry has won the award many times (4).

He helped Liverpool win the Champions League in 2019 and the Premier League in 2020, their first in 30 years.

So far at Liverpool, Salah has scored 2017 goals and provided 92 assists in 337 appearances. 48 of those goals have come in the Champions League. No other African has scored more.

The Egyptian has won two African Player of the Year twice. The only trophy mission in his cabinet is the Africa Cup of Nations.

Didier Drogba's career

Although Jay-Jay Okocha entertained Premier League crowds in the early 2000s, many feel Drogba was Afruica's first biggest star in the English league.

His arrival in London coincided with the arrivals of Jose Mourinho and billionaire Roman Abramovich. The Portuguese tactician quickly made Chelsea a force in England and Europe.

Drogba started playing top-flight football at 23 compared to Salah and Eto'o. That didn't stop him from becoming one of Africa's greats.

He retired in 2018 after winning four Premier League titles and a Champions League crown. He also lifted four FA Cups and two League Cups. He won Golden Boots in 2006/07 and 2009/10. His performances in big games earned him respect, even from rivals.

He scored 65 goals for Ivory Coast in 105 appearances. Just like Salah, he was named African Footballer of the Year twice. The AFCON title eluded Drogba.

The 46-year-old scored 367 goals in his career for both club and country.

Samuel Eto'o career

The Cameroon legend is considered the greatest African footballer of all time. He played for giants such as Barcelona and Inter Milan and won plenty of big trophies.

He started his senior career in Spain with Real Madrid, Mallorca, and Barcelona. He made his name in Catalonia.

In 2006, Eto'o became the first African and only African to win the La Liga Golden Boot. He scored 26 goals in 34 games for Barcelona as they won the league and Champions League double.

He won three La Liga titles, one Serie A crown, and four Champions League titles. The 43-year-old is the only player to win back-to-back trebles with two different clubs. He did so with Barcelona (2008/09) and Inter Milan (2009/10).

Eto'o is Cameroon's all-time top scorer, with 56 goals in 118 appearances. He was part of the Indomitable Lions teams that won the AFCON in 2000 and 2002.

The former Chelsea star scored over 400 goals in more than 700 matches.
