  • Ex-Orlando Pirates coach Roger De Sa is open to coaching Kaizer Chiefs
  • Amakhosi have consistently struggled to compete in the last 10 years
  • Chiefs have not won a trophy since winning the league in 2014/15

Former Orlando Pirates coach, Roger De Sa, has declared his interest in the Kaizer Chiefs coaching role.

Amakhosi have endured a difficult period since they won the 2014/15 PSL title under Stuart Baxter.

They will end this season trophyless after losing to second-tier side Milford in the Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs' chances of winning the 2023/24 DStv Premiership this season are all but over. They are 17 points behind leaders and reigning champions Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played two games less.

Their defeat in the 180th Soweto Derby was a painful reminder of how far they are from becoming a top team again.

They started the season under new coach Molefi Ntseki, but a run of poor form saw him sacked and replaced by Cavin Johnson on an interim basis, per Far Post.

Ntseki lasted just 13 matches before he left in October 2023. Their fans are frustrated with the direction of the club after years of underachievement.

Can De Sa help the Glamour Boys recapture their magic?

Roger De Sa on Kaizer Chiefs

In an interview with Kick Off, the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper believes Chiefs need to make a move right now.

"It's always better to start early than later, even if it's not an active role," he said. "It would give their next head coach a bit of a head start. I think that is advisable if they are gonna change."

De Sa is ready to jump on the opportunity to coach Amakhosi. This move will likely anger Pirates fans.

"I haven't sent any CVs to anybody; I've never applied for a job. They know where I am, if they are interested they would contact me...Everybody knows I'm available. I'm sitting at home. No rush for me I'm sitting at home and looking at options."

De Sa has experience as a coach at the club and international levels. He started as a goalkeeper coach for South Africa in the early 2000s before joining Santos in 2006.

In 2013, he led Pirates to the final of the CAF Champions League, which they lost to Egyptian giants Al Ahly, per Far Post. He was part of the coaching staff at Egypt, Qatar, and Iran.

He has also coached Bidvest Wits, Ajax Cape Town, Maritzburg United, Platinum Stars, Cape Umoya, and All-Stars.

Johnson blamed for Chiefs derby loss

Sports Brief earlier reported on Chiefs legend, Doctor Khumalo, blaming Johnson for their 3-2 defeat to Pirates in the 180th Soweto Derby.

The Bafana Bafana legend icon was unimpressed with Johnson's in-game management, saying the team failed to assert their dominance after taking the lead twice.
