  • Nigeria are still looking for a new coach after Jose Peseiro's departure
  • Ex-Nigeria coach Adeboye Onigbinde would like a local coach to take over
  • Finidi George and Emmanuel Amuneke have been linked with the role

Nigeria are still looking for a coach to replace Jose Peseiro, who left the role after his contract ended earlier this month.

Former Nigeria coach Adeboye Onigbinde believes a local coach can lead the Super Eagles if they are given the freedom to operate.

The Super Eagles will be without a head coach when they face Ghana and Mali during the March international break.

Their next coach will be under immense pressure. Fans will be hoping for a successful 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Finidi George, Sunday Oliseh, and Emmanuel Amuneke have been heavily linked with the job, but the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) are yet to appoint Peseiro's successor, per Afrik Foot.

Onigbinde led Nigeria to the 1984 AFCON final, which they lost to Cameroon. He wants a local coach to take over per Complete Sports.

"Giving the free hands because that’s the best for the Indigenous coaches for them to succeed...the people in authority knows what they want."

Whether local or foreign, the next coach will have a star-studded pool of players to choose from.

Segun Odegbami wants local coach

Sports Brief earlier reported on Nigeria legend Segun Odegbami, saying a local coach can replace Peseiro.

The late Stephen Keshi led the Super Eagles to their last AFCON title in 2013. Augustine Eguavoen was Nigeria's coach at the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon.

The 1980 AFCON winner heavily criticised the decision to reward Peseiro, saying he didn't win the title for Nigeria.

Nsien on Nigeria role

Sports Brief earlier reported on US Under-19 coach, Michael Nsien declaring his interest in the Nigeria job.

Nsien also outlined his elaborate plan for the Super Eagles if he takes over the role. He was also not impressed with Peseiro's tactics at the 2023 AFCON.

He reiterated that he would use a more front-foot approach against African teams and adjust accordingly when facing European sides.
