According to Sportskeeda, Sterling found himself on the receiving end due to his poor tie performance.

The 29-year-old first missed a penalty, spurred a sitter, and sent the ball to the skies from a goalscoring opportunity via a free-kick.

His overall display sparked frustration from fans at Stamford Bridge, with the Blues' support base booing the England international.

So frustrated the fans were that a section of them were heard chanting 'take him off' midway through the match.

Sterling responds to Chelsea boos

Sterling has now taken to social media to respond to the boos, with the former Manchester City winger promising to come out stronger.

The ex-Liverpool ace also took some time to apologise for the missed penalty.

“Wembley Bound. To all the Chelsea fans, apologies for the penalty miss. I’ll be back 10x times stronger to help the team win and continue to keep fighting for the badge every single day. Let’s go Blues," Sterling posted on Instagram.

Meanwhile, despite Sterling's underwhelming performance, Chelsea were still able to scrap a comfortable win to qualify for the semi-final of the tournament.

Goals from Marc Cucurella, Cole Palmer, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Noni Madueke secured the victory.
