  • The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) raided SAFA offices
  • SAFA President, Danny Jordaan, is linked to allegations of fraud and theft
  • The Association denied all the claims and threatened to take legal action

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has expressed worry following a recent raid on the South African Football Association (SAFA) headquarters by the Hawks, South Africa's Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DCPI)

The raid, conducted in Johannesburg, was in connection with allegations of fraud and theft totalling R1.3 million, reportedly linked to SAFA President, Danny Jordaan.

In a statement on Saturday, March 16, CAF conveyed their feelings regarding the raid's impact on South Africa's football reputation.

They said they were investigating the matter per their statutes and regulations and requested that SAFA provide a report ensuring compliance with CAF and FIFA guidelines.

The Hawks named Jordaan the subject of their investigation concerning the alleged embezzlement of funds without the association's approval.

"While the allegations made by the Hawks are serious, in line with international legal principles and jurisprudence, Safa and Jordaan are presumed to be innocent until an appropriate judicial body concludes otherwise," stated CAF, as reported by Goal.

SAFA threatened legal action against the unit for disclosing Jordaan's involvement in an ongoing investigation. They denied any wrongdoing and announced their intention to challenge the search and seizure in court.

Hawks spokesperson Col Katlego Mogale affirmed the allegations against the SAFA head, claiming he had misused resources for personal benefit between 2014 and 2018. The alleged misuse included hiring private security and public relations companies without proper authorization, as reported by Times Live.

During the raid, Hawks seized electronic devices and documents, further intensifying the scrutiny surrounding the investigation.

Uncertainty over Bafana’s AFCON 2023 player bonuses

Sports Brief earlier reported that Jordaan remained tight-lipped on AFCON 2023 bonuses allocated to Bafana Bafana players.

Hugo Broos' men performed commendably in Abidjan, winning bronze for the first tie in 24 years.

Despite earning R47 million for this, the president has refrained from disclosing the exact bonus figures for the players.
